Kahlia Stehlin-Richardson – Finished course on Thursday, into the Workforce the very next day!

Kahlia completed her studies with Crown in July 2014 gaining her Crown Certificate in International Travel, Tourism and Airline Studies, which included both the STA Sales and Marketing Certificates.

Kahlia came to Crown from Albany Senior High School.  She was a committed student who excelled in her time management and organisational abilities, handling both study and work at the same time. While studying she worked for Function Staff, where she was able to go to many events and meet a range of inspiring people while sharpening her hospitality and customer service skills.

Always being the go-getter with a can-do attitude, Kahlia had secured herself with a job in the tourism industry, which started the very next day after she had finished her Crown course.

Currently Kahlia is working in a full-time position with 360 Discovery Cruises as a Customer Service and Sales Representative. Of her position there, Kahlia says “Not only have I got a position in the office, but I am also doing training for working on the boats so [360 Discovery Cruises] have offered me a range of opportunities here. I enjoy the face to face contact with the customers and love gaining a rapport with them!”

So what does the future hold for Kahlia? Her long term goal is to be a flight attendant so honing her customer service skills with 360 is definitely a great stepping stone. With Kahlia’s great attitude to work and life in general, the sky’s the limit!

Beatrice is originally from Sweden and is currently studying the Crown Certificate in International Travel, Tourism & Airline Studies. She was chosen from a group of eight of her classmates and is the sixth recipient of this inaugural scholarship.

"I am extremely happy to be given the opportunity to get an insight of this part of the tourism industry. The experience and knowledge I will gain from it is incredibly valuable and is something I will bring with me to any future job opportunities." Beatrice says.

Beatrice will work closely with New Caledonia Tourism attending various trade events, industry shows and be based in the offices in Parnell one day a week.

“These students are the future tourism industry employees. It is important that they have hands on experience during their studies” says General Manager Simon Duffy. “Working closely with a significant industry partner like Crown Institute of Studies allows us to help prepare these students while at the same time gives us the opportunity to give something back to the industry”

“When I started my study abroad experience, my goal was to achieve something special, so I'm delighted to have become the best performer in New Zealand on the IATA exam. I think this is a result of my iron will and above all the support of my teachers, friends and family. Thank you so much!” said Mao.

Mao is now furthering her travel and tourism studies at university in Japan.

Crown Travel Students Get Paid Work Experience on a Cruise Ship Turnaround Day

On Saturday 16 November 2014, thirteen of our Travel students chose the take the opportunity to work for Renaissance Tours for the day. They were involved in the exciting and intense experience of handling a cruise ship ‘turnaround’.

The Celebrity Solstice was docked in Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour and her arriving passengers were all disembarking that morning and another load of passengers were checking-in and boarding for their cruise. As this ship can carry over 2,800 passengers, you can imagine, it’s a busy day!

The students were working in a variety of roles for Renaissance Tours, including:

  • Check-in Agents
  • Pier Directional Staff
  • Coach Greeters
  • Offsite Check-in Agents
  • Offsite Directional Staff
  • Airport Coach Greeters
  • Line Greeters

The students really enjoyed the chance to work with real travelers and for a real tour company and they got paid, too! They were based at either the Auckland War Memorial Museum or the Hilton Hotel on Princes Wharf.

This kind of experience is great for our students’ CVs.  Each student even received a reference letter for their efforts.  Everyone at Crown wishes to thank Renaissance Tours and we look forward to working with their excellent team again soon.

Crown’s travel students experience the Fijian way of life

Fiji is one of the most popular destinations visited by New Zealanders on holiday; so where better to take our current travel and tourism students on a cultural educational overseas experience than Fiji?

The trip was booked through STA Travel, with Feejee Experience offering us an insight into the ‘real’ Fiji. The students swam, hiked, sand-boarded, soaked in mud pools and hung out on beautiful beaches, and, through the variety of activities, learnt about the Fijian way of life. A highlight of the trip was taking part in a sevusevu ceremony (meeting and greeting visitors) in a local village, where students took part in the kava offering, ate local delicacies and danced.

Feejee Experience gave us a fantastic example of how, as tourists and future tourism industry employees, we can help support local communities without damaging the environment.

For more information about our travel, tourism & airline studies course, contact us today on 0800 357 316 or info@crown.ac.nz

Enrolling now for intakes starting in October 2013 and February 2014.

Ciya’s great networking opportunities with New Caledonia Tourism

Crown Institute’s 2013 New Caledonia Tourism scholarship winner, Ciya Josephmary has been rubbing shoulders with travel wholesale and retail managers as part of her work experience.

New Caledonia Tourism held their Roadshow a few weeks ago at Stamford Plaza Hotel Auckland.  Ciya was involved in setting up the event and then sat at one of the tables with the other agents for the evening.  She gained a great overview of the destination, as there were twelve presentations from various hotels, activities and roles within New Caledonia and the tourism industry.  Ciya is pictured below at the chocolate fountain.

Ciya also attended a SKAL (International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals) members’ lunch sponsored by New Caledonia Tourism, last month.  She is pictured below with Ian White from Performance Media, Asa Duffy and Lesley Perrie from Planet Travel Marketing.

These have been great opportunities for Ciya to network with industry representatives.  These networking events will help her when she completes her Crown Institute course and is applying for a job in the industry.

Claire Hooton, New Caledonia Tourism Sales and Promotion Coordinator says “Ciya is gaining more and more confidence and was a real help with our Auckland Roadshow and has been great to have in the office”.

Ciya will continue to work closely with New Caledonia Tourism, attending various trade events, industry shows and to be based in the offices in Parnell one day a week.

After last year completing a Certificate Course, which included Tourism Core Skills and Travel Level 3 & 4 National Certificates, Ciya is working towards her Level 5 Tourism Management Diploma.  Ciya’s goal is to become a Customer Service Agent.
