Crown’s 2014 Fiji Visit

Each year, Crown Institute offers our travel and tourism students the opportunity to visit beautiful Fiji. This cultural and educational trip is designed so students can experience this popular destination as both tourists and also as future tourism industry employees.

The trip was booked through STA Travel, with Feejee Experience offering our students an insight to the ‘real’ Fiji.

The group landed in Fiji on the Monday evening, and for the whole of Tuesday the students enjoyed a free day shopping in Nadi.

Wednesday was a busy day for our group: with their tour guide, they visited a local village where the children sang songs to welcome them, and our students gave the school learning materials and lollies for the children. Following this, they visited Natadola Beach, which is considered to be in the top ten beaches in the world. There the students enjoyed a traditional Fijiian barbeque before having fun sanduning on boogie boards and spending the night in Mango Bay.

Thursday was an early start beginning with a bushwalk to some beautiful waterfalls, and a boat trip back to the beach. The students then travelled to the Uprising Resort to take lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing. Some students did activities such as henna painting, lessons on coconut uses, and how to make traditional kokoda (raw fish marinated in coconut milk) dishes.

Friday was the last day for our students in Fiji, so while they were still at the Uprising Resort, many of them took the morning to relax, although some of the more active students enjoyed a surfing lesson. After this the students travelled to Suva where they explored the country’s capital before heading to the airport to come back to New Zealand.

The Feejee Experience gave our students a fantastic example of how, as both tourists and as future tourism industry employees, we can help support local communities without damaging the environment, while still enjoying everything Fiji has to offer.

Thank you to STA Travel and Feejee Experience, and we know our new students will be looking forward to visiting next year!

Crown takes the classroom out and about in Auckland and soon in Fiji!

Crown Institute recognises the importance of learning outside of the classroom and as part of the programme of field trips and guest speakers we offer the opportunity for students to take part in many educational experiences, including a trip to Fiji!

Most industry organisations require their staff to have knowledge of local operations. So, where better to gain experience and develop knowledge than at some of Auckland’s amazing events? Students have the opportunity to develop their industry knowledge first hand, by experiencing a range of transport, accommodation, attractions and activities and gain valuable skills working with others, researching destinations and selling. They enjoy the chance to experience different sights, cultures and activities to build their confidence and knowledge of the exciting hospitality, travel and tourism industries.

Recently, some of Crown's Hospitality and Travel, Tourism & Airline Studies students spent a morning at ASB Polyfest. They had a great time visiting the stalls and watching some of the amazing performances!

Another group of students from the Travel & Tourism 2A/3A class visited Piha. Their first stop was the Arataki Visitor Centre to take in the stunning Waitakere scenery. They, they continued to the beautiful Kitekite falls for a swim.

Following that, they spent time relaxing at Piha Beach before enjoying traditional fish and chips. Thank you to Stray New Zealand for organising a great day out for the students. It was an excellent way for the students to finish one of their level 4 marketing unit standards.

Fiji is one of the most popular destinations visited by New Zealanders on holiday, so it’s a great place to take our current travel and tourism students on an international cultural educational experience. Students will soon be jetting across to Fiji to experience an overseas trip and a little of the Fijian way of life. Students hoping to work in the hotel or travel and tourism industries will benefit from an exciting travel experience.

The trip is offered to students studying Travel, Tourism, Hotel and Hospitality courses at Crown Institute. This year, students will be travelling to Viti Levu Island, Fiji for six days in August. The trip will be arranged through STA Travel. Flights are with Fiji Airways and the destination transport and activities are with Feejee Experience.

Crown’s travel students experience the Fijian way of life

Fiji is one of the most popular destinations visited by New Zealanders on holiday; so where better to take our current travel and tourism students on a cultural educational overseas experience than Fiji?

The trip was booked through STA Travel, with Feejee Experience offering us an insight into the ‘real’ Fiji. The students swam, hiked, sand-boarded, soaked in mud pools and hung out on beautiful beaches, and, through the variety of activities, learnt about the Fijian way of life. A highlight of the trip was taking part in a sevusevu ceremony (meeting and greeting visitors) in a local village, where students took part in the kava offering, ate local delicacies and danced.

Feejee Experience gave us a fantastic example of how, as tourists and future tourism industry employees, we can help support local communities without damaging the environment.

Fun-filled term of activities, fundraisers and events!

Bungy jumping from the Auckland Harbour Bridge, visiting the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere and kayaking in the Bay of Islands are just a few of the exciting things Crown students got up to in term one!

It’s been a fun-filled term with Crown students participating in a variety of activities, fundraisers and events.

The most recent fundraiser was an Anzac Day bake sale that raised $156 for the RSA.

There are weekly activities, like bowling or sailing, along with various class trips!

At Crown, we believe in hands-on learning. Our tutors are always looking for places where students can go and learn about many industries, especially travel and hospitality enterprises.

Recently students visited SkyCity and the Sky Tower and climbed the Auckland Harbour Bridge, where they learned how tour groups are taken around. Some were also brave enough to jump off!

There was a visit to the Bay of Islands for a couple of days and there’s a trip to Fiji in August!

It’s been a great term indeed and we are looking forward to providing many more opportunities to our students in coming months.
