Success Tips for New Travel and Tourism Students | Crown Institute of Studies

success-tips-for-new-travel-and-tourism-students

Travel and tourism are two words that, when put together, sounds really nice. For people who really love the outdoors, a job in the travel and tourism industry is heaven-sent. The journey to becoming a professional in this field isn’t easy, but a word or two from those who are already experts in their role goes a very long way.

Do you want to become the best in the industry? Below, you’ll find some valuable advice from professionals in the travel and tourism industry.

Become an expert yourself

The tourism industry allows for a lot of general tourism experts but, to really be successful, focus in a particular field is necessary. Some people love the mountains; others love rivers or the sea. If you want to be a successful agent in this industry, work toward becoming a proven expert in one area.

Learn how to be a storyteller

People in travel and tourism courses suffer from the overload of online content about travel already available on the Internet. Nothing beats personal stories, however. If you want to become a successful member of the industry, a wealth of experience and the ability to relay your adventures to an indifferent audience should be your primary weapon! If you can interest them with your stories of outdoor hiking, you’ve got yourself a loyal client.

Practice makes perfect

Becoming a travel and tourism professional means you’ll be dealing with different people. At first, customer service may be something you’re not equipped to deal with. A pro-tip is to roleplay scenarios to improve your skills; imagine that you’re dealing with a difficult customer, or have a classmate help you in that task. Practicing your conversation skills will go a long way when you’re already working!

When in doubt, ask around

It’s rare for a student to come into class with all the answers already figured out. So when you’re confused about something, ask around for help! Ask the teacher or classmates to repeat something if it didn’t come across clearly. Don’t be afraid to ask your classmates for help if you’re struggling to understand a specific concept. A well-informed student always turns into a well-informed professional!

Prepare a proper CV

When you’re looking for a job after graduating, your CV is the first thing employers will look at. Remember to create a CV that exudes confidence and shows how prepared you are for the job! For this, career week in travel and tourism courses is important – it is here that you get taught the basics of the working world. If you don’t want a hard time looking for work, having a CV that’s straight to the point is important.

Crown Institute of Studies has always produced outstanding travel and tourism professionals, and we ensure everyone finishes our course with all the necessary skills for their field! Crown’s 2014 Fiji Visit

Each year, Crown Institute offers our travel and tourism students the opportunity to visit beautiful Fiji. This cultural and educational trip is designed so students can experience this popular destination as both tourists and also as future tourism industry employees.

The trip was booked through STA Travel, with Feejee Experience offering our students an insight to the ‘real’ Fiji.

The group landed in Fiji on the Monday evening, and for the whole of Tuesday the students enjoyed a free day shopping in Nadi.

Wednesday was a busy day for our group: with their tour guide, they visited a local village where the children sang songs to welcome them, and our students gave the school learning materials and lollies for the children. Following this, they visited Natadola Beach, which is considered to be in the top ten beaches in the world. There the students enjoyed a traditional Fijiian barbeque before having fun sanduning on boogie boards and spending the night in Mango Bay.

Thursday was an early start beginning with a bushwalk to some beautiful waterfalls, and a boat trip back to the beach. The students then travelled to the Uprising Resort to take lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing. Some students did activities such as henna painting, lessons on coconut uses, and how to make traditional kokoda (raw fish marinated in coconut milk) dishes.

Friday was the last day for our students in Fiji, so while they were still at the Uprising Resort, many of them took the morning to relax, although some of the more active students enjoyed a surfing lesson. After this the students travelled to Suva where they explored the country’s capital before heading to the airport to come back to New Zealand.

The Feejee Experience gave our students a fantastic example of how, as both tourists and as future tourism industry employees, we can help support local communities without damaging the environment, while still enjoying everything Fiji has to offer.

Thank you to STA Travel and Feejee Experience, and we know our new students will be looking forward to visiting next year!

Ruth Vatau – Living the Dream at Disneyworld, Florida

Ruth came to Crown Institute from Massey High School.  She completed her studies with Crown in December 2013 and graduated with the Crown Certificate in International Travel, Tourism & Airline Studies.

While studying with Crown, Ruth completed her National Certificates in Travel Level 3 & 4 along with the STA Sales Certificate and STA Marketing Certificate. Ruth was a dedicated student who managed both study and work at the same time. Although tough at times, she believes it was all worth it to get to where she is now.

Part of Ruth’s dream in pursuing a career in Travel & Tourism involved her desire to explore the world and to experience the adventures travelling to new destinations offers. Her dream is certainly being realised as she is currently living and working at Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida in the United States.

Ruth was selected from a number of candidates for this exciting opportunity, and after a tense few months of interviews, Ruth proved that hard work and dedication do pay off in the end. Of her internship with Disneyworld, Ruth says “I am very excited for my new journey and would like to thank Crown Institute for offering me this chance to work for one of the biggest companies in the world!”

We’re proud of our graduates, and Ruth shows that with commitment and the right attitude, dreams really do come true!

Next courses start 1 September 2014 and 2 February 2015.  Click HERE to enrol now!
