Five Tips to Balancing a Part-Time Job While Studying

While you’re studying, you may find yourself wanting or needing to get a part-time job. Most students work part-time when they are studying, whether it be to earn some extra cash, or to gain relevant work experience. If you’re working part-time while studying at university, we’ve got 5 tips to share with you that can make having a job and balancing your studies more manageable. Let’s dive right in!

Be Realistic About Your Availability

Depending on what and where you study, you may only be required to be in classes or lectures for half of the week. Looking at the blank spaces in our uni timetables, it can be easy to think that we have all the spare time in the world. This can give us the illusion that we have more time to spend working than we think! Unfortunately, this can backfire badly when we’re applying for jobs.

Be realistic – you need to know how much time you’re going to need for studying and doing assignments outside of just attending lectures. If you are studying full-time, think of your studies as a 40-hour work week, just like any other full-time job. You can then be realistic at what hours you have left over in the week to spend time working.

Be upfront about this when you apply for jobs and go to interviews, so that your employer is aware of your schedule and can’t add you to extra shifts. You can quickly overwork and burn out, which is not a good thing for you or your employer. If you think you may have more time to work earlier in the semester than later on when things start to get hectic, be upfront about this as well and give dates to potential employers so that they are fully aware of your availability.

Try to Get a Job in Your Field Of Study

Unfortunately, you aren’t going to get your dream job in your field while you’re only half way through your degree. Everyone has to start somewhere! However, it is a good idea to apply for part-time work that’s within the industry or that links in with your field of study. This could be a paid internship, a tutoring role, or anything else that relates to your chosen field.

Having a part-time job that relates to your degree not only gives you an edge, but it can also be extremely valuable when it comes time to graduate and find a full-time role. You will already have some experience under your belt to add to your CV, giving you an edge on all the other graduates.

Some courses offer work experience papers within the degree. Ask your tutors or look online to see if your course has an industry lead paper. If your job can help you towards completing a paper, you can easily kill two birds with one stone and save yourself a lot of time and stress.

Finally, some courses may even have industry partnerships that will help you get a job. For example, at Crown Institute we offer a Study and Work programme. This allows students to work at one of our partnering companies in the travel and tourism industry, as well as other industries, to gain relevant work experience while they study. You can gain professional training in employment skills and your work experience is guaranteed to be paid.

Make the Most Out of Study Breaks

We’ve all been there – you want to relish your student life for as long as possible. We get it. After all, this is the last time in your life you will ever get two weeks off every 6 weeks and all of summer to go on holiday. However, study breaks are a good opportunity to get extra shifts where you can and work more hours. You will find yourself needing the extra cash for when your studies get stressful and you have to prioritise.

Christmas break is an especially good time to pick up extra shifts at your job, as it’s easily the busiest time of the year in most industries. If you put your hand up and offer yourself for more time during Christmas and other breaks, your employers will probably be more than happy to give you more shifts.

Plan Out Your Weeks

Planning is key to not falling behind, especially when it’s closer to exams or when assignments are due. There is nothing worse than thinking you have all the time in the week to study, only to leave it to the last minute and then be stressing out about exams and assignments while you’re at work.

Planning can help avoid this. Invest in a good weekly planner – whether it’s an app, a book or your online calendar. Block out hours each day when you have class and work, and then block out an efficient number of hours to study.

The next part about planning is sticking to your plan! This may sound obvious but is harder to do than you would think. Try to motivate yourself so that you don’t procrastinate, and you will feel less stressed overall.

Most Importantly: Don’t Forget that Your Studies Come First!

Once you get a job, it can be so easy to get excited about making money and forget to prioritise your studies. However, it’s important to understand that studying is your number one priority. This is what’s going to propel you into much better work opportunities in the future.

You don’t want to stay at the same level on the corporate ladder forever and getting a degree can leap you steps closer to getting your dream job. In order to get there, you can’t lose sight of the necessary steps towards reaching your career goals.

Crown Institute and Function Staff Brings Paid ‘Internships’ to Students

Ellerslie Racecourse

For events like Christmas and beyond, staffing is a problem most businesses providing events support services encounter. A common problem would be the company finding itself undermanned or missing a few personnel for areas like the bar, the kitchen, or at the cashier counter.

Crown Institute has courses in Auckland that allows students to gain valuable experience while working at various events. Crown grants students guaranteed work while they study. The experience gained is just as important as the lessons learned, where the students gain valuable insider information they can use for a future in the hospitality industry or other similar work.

Consider the Spark Arena, which has a collection of events lined up from December through January. Similarly, a number of events are also happening at the Sky City Auckland Convention Center. The size of these events requires the help of staffing and other personnel with training from hospitality courses. Crown Institute gives students the opportunity of a lifetime—to gain actual work experience from professionals in the industry—via the “study-and-work” program.

This program also gives students further education by applying theories to practice, such as training in different skills needed for various services, particularly in customer service. What’s more, the work the students put in is paid. In partnership with Function Staff, among others, students also gain sound career advice and get pointers on how to ace future job interviews.

For a fruitful career in the hospitality industry, get in touch with Crown Institute of Studies, a leader in producing well-equipped professionals since 1972. For more information about different courses and programs contact them on 0800 357 316 or info@crown.ac.nz

Ciya’s great networking opportunities with New Caledonia Tourism

Crown Institute’s 2013 New Caledonia Tourism scholarship winner, Ciya Josephmary has been rubbing shoulders with travel wholesale and retail managers as part of her work experience.

New Caledonia Tourism held their Roadshow a few weeks ago at Stamford Plaza Hotel Auckland.  Ciya was involved in setting up the event and then sat at one of the tables with the other agents for the evening.  She gained a great overview of the destination, as there were twelve presentations from various hotels, activities and roles within New Caledonia and the tourism industry.  Ciya is pictured below at the chocolate fountain.

Ciya also attended a SKAL (International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals) members’ lunch sponsored by New Caledonia Tourism, last month.  She is pictured below with Ian White from Performance Media, Asa Duffy and Lesley Perrie from Planet Travel Marketing.

These have been great opportunities for Ciya to network with industry representatives.  These networking events will help her when she completes her Crown Institute course and is applying for a job in the industry.

Claire Hooton, New Caledonia Tourism Sales and Promotion Coordinator says “Ciya is gaining more and more confidence and was a real help with our Auckland Roadshow and has been great to have in the office”.

Ciya will continue to work closely with New Caledonia Tourism, attending various trade events, industry shows and to be based in the offices in Parnell one day a week.

After last year completing a Certificate Course, which included Tourism Core Skills and Travel Level 3 & 4 National Certificates, Ciya is working towards her Level 5 Tourism Management Diploma.  Ciya’s goal is to become a Customer Service Agent.

2013 New Caledonia Scholarship Winner – Cracencia Josephmary

Second year Crown Institute student Cracencia Josephmary is this year’s New Caledonia Tourism Scholarship winner.

After last year completing a Certificate Course which included Tourism Core Skills and Travel Level 3 & 4 National Certificates, Cracencia is working towards her Level 5 Tourism Management Diploma. Winning this scholarship and having the opportunity to work with Simon Duffy and his team at New Caledonia Tourism will give her an inside into the Tourism industry at ground level and will equip her with the skills she needs to develop in achieving her ultimate goal of working as a Customer Service Agent.

Head of School Travel, Tourism, Hospitality and Business at Crown Institute of Studies, Leanne Annabell is delighted at the high calibre of students applying for the scholarship. “I am so happy for  Cracencia she is a very deserving student,  but it is also really hard to see those who miss out. It is an enormous opportunity for them to be involved in a National Tourism office like New Caledonia and to have some of their tertiary fees subsidised is huge for them and their families” said Leanne Annabell.

Cracencia was chosen from a group of eight of her classmates and is the fifth recipient of this inaugural scholarship.

“It is always good to be able to put something back into the industry and to be able to work closely with a significant industry partner like Crown Institute of Studies” says General Manager Simon Duffy. “These young people are the tour operators, travel agents, customer service staff, hotel managers and potential NTO General Managers of the future so it is important that they are well nurtured by the industry during their studies. Cracencia is enthusiastic and passionate and we look forward to having her with us this year”.

Cracencia will work closely with New Caledonia Tourism attending various trade events, industry shows and be based in the offices in Parnell one day a week.
