At Crown Institute of Studies, we believe that our students’ views should be heard.
The Student Representatives’ Team was created to strengthen the Crown Community. The reps are the voice of the Crown students; they liaise with students about various issues and organise events and activities. The Student Representatives’ Team plays an integral part in building the Crown Community.
Meet our reps for Term 1, 2013!
I decided to become a Student Representative to help improve my leadership skills. I’m not a shy person so feel free to ask me anything; I am always willing to help others.
I joined the Student Representatives’ Team because I think it is an awesome opportunity to learn new things, meet new people and gain skills, which I can take to future job roles.
I’m proud to say I’m a Pacific Islander, from the Cook Islands! The reason I signed up for the Student Representatives’ Team is to gain more experience and to meet new people.
I came to Crown as it’s a warm, friendly, inviting place to study. I wanted to be a Student Rep as I am creative and love to go the extra mile.
I became a Student Representative because I want to gain more confidence and meet new people!
I chose to become one of the Student Reps so I can help other students and will certainly do my best to help you!
I became a Student Representative because I believe everybody has a voice and deserves to be heard. I also have community spirit and I’m interested in helping others.
I wanted to become a Student Rep so that I can expand and develop my leadership skills. I look forward to getting to know the other Student Reps as well as getting to know more of the students here at Crown.
Crown students and staff no longer need to venture out of the campus to find scrumptious muffins, coffee and lunches!
Crown students have just opened up their own café on campus! The Kiwi Café opens from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm each weekday. It’s been a huge hit since it opened on the sixth floor of the Crown building on 11 February 2013.
The food is made fresh every day and is very tasty indeed. From delicious wraps, pizzas and sushi, to cakes and muffins, there is a wide variety of food to suit everyone’s tastes.
At Crown, we are continually trying to find opportunities for our students to gain valuable work experience. Crown hospitality students are helping run the café and the skills they are learning are going towards completing their unit standards.
The Kiwi Café was one of the school’s initiatives for students to learn how to operate their own café and to be trained in running a business. A qualified manager, Kimberley Benz, a recent graduate of Crown, supervises the café.
The skills the students will acquire from this experience will be invaluable. At Crown, we find that graduates who have relevant work experience in the industry step into the workforce much faster than those without it.
How would it feel to work in a dynamic environment with exceptional, like-minded people? It would feel rewarding and exciting!
The hospitality industry offers many job opportunities, from local cafes and backpacker hostels right through to luxury hotels in major cities. Hospitality is one of the largest job providers in the world!
There are two areas of hospitality you could get into: food & beverage service and hotel service. Food & beverage service jobs include bartending, maître d’, waiter/waitress, cruise ships/super yachts positions or gourmet deli service. Hotel service jobs include hotel receptionist, concierge, porter and so on.
So, if you have an interest in working in this sector, then it’s best to gain the right qualifications and skills to get into a job that is perfect for you.
At Crown, we have two certificates you can choose from, depending on your interests. The Crown Certificate in International Hospitality (Food and Beverage Service) or the Crown Certificate in International Hospitality (Hotel Services and Reception Operations).
These are both one-year programmes and each gives you all the necessary skills and qualifications you need to land your dream job. Our courses will have you work-ready and in demand!
There are many benefits to working in hospitality. Here are just a few:
Learn skills which will help you make money anywhere in the world!
The majority of the skills you learn are transferable to many other industries and can take you anywhere.
Our certificates are also internationally recognised, so this gives you extra credentials for your CV.
Diverse job range: numerous jobs are available in the hotel and food and beverage sectors. With the right attitude and skills, there are many opportunities to be taken.
NCEA results are out now. We hope you did as well as you expected and gained entrance in your chosen course.
Some of you may have not achieved University Entrance and this is OK! You still have many different options up your sleeve to get you to your career goals.
Crown may be able to help you reach your goals. We have three stepping-stones, which can take you to where you want to be.
Diploma into a Degree
Wanted to get into university? Didn’t achieve the entry requirements?
At Crown, if you have the right qualifications, you can study one semester of the New Zealand Diploma in Business (Level 6) and gain entrance into a degree programme at your chosen university. If you complete the diplom at Crown, depending on your grades, you may even be able to gain one or two semesters of cross credit at university.
Certificate into a Diploma
If you are looking at getting into a management role in the Travel or Hospitality sector, you can start off studying a certificate and gain some practical and theoretical knowledge in your chosen industry.
Once you have gained all the necessary knowledge, you can step into one of our management diplomas. You can gain a certificate and diploma in Travel and Tourism in only two years or in Hospitality in two and a half years!
Certificate into a job
Want to start working in the industry as soon as possible? You can study a one-year certificate at Crown and, with the right work experience and attitude, step into a job in your chosen industry.
We have a dedicated Careers Advisor who works with you one-on-one to coach you into getting into your dream role.
We have many different options at Crown so why not come in and see what we can do for you?
At Crown Institute, our students are getting that ‘real world’ experience that employers are asking for, while they are studying. Jasmin Thienel (pictured with Peter Gordon), is one of our Travel and Tourism students and has recently secured herself a position at the award-winning restaurant Dine by Peter Gordon located in the Skycity Grand Hotel. By taking up this fantastic opportunity, she has not only met renowned celebrity chef, Peter Gordon, the man behind the restaurant, she is acquiring key skills and knowledge at a respected establishment. She will also have a definite advantage upon completing her qualification, especially when compared to someone with no work experience, and be more confident when moving on to the next stage of her career.
Crown encourages all of our students to find part-time work while they are studying. Many of our students gain valuable work experience organised by Crown during their time here and a lot of our Hospitality students work with Function Staff and build on the knowledge they develop in the classroom. Entry-level positions in retail or customer service are generally suitable for students who just need a bit of experience to give them the skills and confidence needed in today’s workforce. Our Careers Advisor works with our students and graduates to get them ready for all stages of the employment process, from CVs and cover letters, to interview preparation and job applications.
If you want to be work-ready before you graduate, enrol in a course at Crown for 2013! Well-deserved congratulations to our 2012 graduates!
The term ‘congratulations’ is used a lot these days. The sentiment, however, is very fitting for this occasion. On Friday 14 December with over 200 people in attendance, we held our largest ever graduation ceremony, which included graduates from our Travel and Tourism, Hospitality and Business schools. Thank you to the proud parents, family members and friends of our graduates who showed up to acknowledge the hard work and dedication shown by our students in 2012.
After a fantastic slide show of photographs of the year, our Academic Director, Terry Swanson, opened the night with a speech on how well our students have done this year. Whether going on to higher study or entering the workforce, our students will leave with the required skills and knowledge and the belief that there are great things to come.
While handing out certificates, a friendly competition began between the tutors as to who had the best class. There was one shared message though: the staff are proud of the achievements and effort put in by all of our finishing students. Whether shown by applause or by the placing of lei/ula and ula-lole on graduates and tutors, the sense of accomplishment and pride was evident in all who attended.
Our guest speaker, Henare O’Brien, ensured we ended the night on a high. With some humour and participation thrown in, he instilled the message that this is only the beginning for our graduates. With a bit of determination, you can overcome your obstacles and achieve any goals you set for yourself. This is a message we hope that our students remember. We hope that as they take the next step in their lives and their careers, they can look back and be proud of what they have achieved with us at Crown Institute of Studies.
To all of our graduates for 2012, congratulations, we are proud of you and we wish you all the best for your future endeavours.
