Great networking opportunities at Industry Day 2014

At our annual Industry Day, on 14 November 2013, numerous Crown Institute of Studies students secured interviews with some leading Auckland businesses and lots more did some great networking, which we’re sure will mean several will have secured jobs before graduating!

At this year’s event, students met with representatives from a variety of entities including ANZ, Base Travel, Sky City, Frog Recruitment, City Life, Function Staff, STA Travel, Auckland Museum, Contiki, The Langham, Stray Travel, Kiwi Experience, Accor, Student Job Search, Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand and Quinn Recruitment. We would like to thank all of these companies for their participation.

“We love working with Crown Institute of Studies students and their graduates. I find they are work-ready and have all the required knowledge and training so they can step into any type of hospitality role without further training,” says Troy Huston, owner of Function Staff.

Industry Days are an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the organisations they could work for in the future, learn about the different career paths they could take and present themselves as potential employees. We have had excellent positive feedback about the event from the both the participating industry reps and our students.

You can see more photos of the event on our Facebook page HERE.

Get As in your exams!

What’s the Best Way to Get Ready for Your Exams? Check Out Our Top Five Study Tips!

Many of you will now be in the thick of the examination period so you’ll already be in study mode. We can always improve our study skills, though, so here are some great study tips to help you get the best possible marks!

1. Study alone

Group study sessions can be a lot of fun, however if you need to get some serious study done, it’s best to study alone, as group sessions can get off-topic quickly and might be covering areas that aren’t the most important for you.

2. Create your perfect study zone

Your study zone should be a place that is quiet, comfortable and free from distractions. Just make sure you remove as many distractions in your zone as possible. It’s best to have no music on, definitely no television and stay well away from the internet. Oh… and make sure that you turn off your phone! Once you’ve done an hour or two, you can reward yourself with a few minutes to check Facebook and reply to your text messages!

3. Make sure you are prepped

Get all your study materials together before you get into study mode. Make sure you have all your books, notes, study guides and writing utensils in front of you. If you’ve got to keep getting up to get things, it means you’ll likely get distracted from the task at hand.

4. Turn your notes into flash cards

Flash cards are an excellent way to test your memory. As you read through important facts, rewrite them in Q&A form on some plain cards.  For example, to study historical facts, write the historical fact on one side of the card and the key details on the other side.

5. Snack wisely and healthy while you study

To stay sharp while you study, stay away from junk food! Snack on dark leafy greens, whole grains, peanut butter and milk or water. Feeling sluggish? Caffeine or energy drinks won't help you in the long run. Get your energy boost instead by eating a banana or an apple. By all means timetable exercise into your study days; it can help to keep your mind fresh, but don’t allow it to become an excuse for staying away from the books!

The team at Crown would like to wish you all the best with your exams this year!

Crown’s travel students experience the Fijian way of life

Fiji is one of the most popular destinations visited by New Zealanders on holiday; so where better to take our current travel and tourism students on a cultural educational overseas experience than Fiji?

The trip was booked through STA Travel, with Feejee Experience offering us an insight into the ‘real’ Fiji. The students swam, hiked, sand-boarded, soaked in mud pools and hung out on beautiful beaches, and, through the variety of activities, learnt about the Fijian way of life. A highlight of the trip was taking part in a sevusevu ceremony (meeting and greeting visitors) in a local village, where students took part in the kava offering, ate local delicacies and danced.

Feejee Experience gave us a fantastic example of how, as tourists and future tourism industry employees, we can help support local communities without damaging the environment.

Do you prefer your raspberry jam shaken or stirred?

Congratulations to the Crown Institute of Studies students who competed at the 2013 New Zealand Culinary Fare.

Students from Crown competed for the first time in the Original/Innovative Cocktail class of the Fare.  They were awarded silver and bronze medals. The judging was extremely strict compared to the Auckland Regional Culinary Fare.  No gold medals were awarded in the Original/Innovative Cocktail class, so this was a great result.

Chris Saw’s ‘Mad Craving’ cocktail won him a silver medal.  He used some really interesting ingredients such as fresh ginger, raspberry jam, rhubarb and his own homemade sour mix.  The judges commented on how well he had infused strawberry Skittles in the Finlandia Vodka that he used in the cocktail.

The Crown students all study in the Certificate in International Hospitality – Food and Beverage Service course.  This is a very popular course where students gain six NZQA National Certificates and the internationally recognised London City and Guilds Diploma.

Along with the class-work, the course includes focused career sessions, graduate career guidance and an up to date job zone. Many of our students gain relevant work experience while studying.  Students are supported during studies to become work ready and hit the ground running. Crown hospitality students work in many of Auckland’s prestigious hotels, restaurants and bars.

Studying a hospitality course can help you to secure one of the best jobs in the industry, as there is a shortage of experienced workers. Vacancies can appear suddenly, so when the perfect opportunity arises, you want to be prepared, knowing you're qualified with the experience and expertise to be in the running for a great position.

If you would like more information about Crown’s Hospitality courses then please contact the recruitment team on 0800 357 316 or info@crown.ac.nz.

Ciya’s great networking opportunities with New Caledonia Tourism

Crown Institute’s 2013 New Caledonia Tourism scholarship winner, Ciya Josephmary has been rubbing shoulders with travel wholesale and retail managers as part of her work experience.

New Caledonia Tourism held their Roadshow a few weeks ago at Stamford Plaza Hotel Auckland.  Ciya was involved in setting up the event and then sat at one of the tables with the other agents for the evening.  She gained a great overview of the destination, as there were twelve presentations from various hotels, activities and roles within New Caledonia and the tourism industry.  Ciya is pictured below at the chocolate fountain.

Ciya also attended a SKAL (International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals) members’ lunch sponsored by New Caledonia Tourism, last month.  She is pictured below with Ian White from Performance Media, Asa Duffy and Lesley Perrie from Planet Travel Marketing.

These have been great opportunities for Ciya to network with industry representatives.  These networking events will help her when she completes her Crown Institute course and is applying for a job in the industry.

Claire Hooton, New Caledonia Tourism Sales and Promotion Coordinator says “Ciya is gaining more and more confidence and was a real help with our Auckland Roadshow and has been great to have in the office”.

Ciya will continue to work closely with New Caledonia Tourism, attending various trade events, industry shows and to be based in the offices in Parnell one day a week.

After last year completing a Certificate Course, which included Tourism Core Skills and Travel Level 3 & 4 National Certificates, Ciya is working towards her Level 5 Tourism Management Diploma.  Ciya’s goal is to become a Customer Service Agent.
